Why a Motor Trips During Startup
How to distinguish normal starting current from a real starting problem.
A motor draws a high current while accelerating, but a trip during startup can still indicate a fault. The timing of the trip and the type of protection provide useful clues.
Record when it trips
Does it trip immediately, after a few seconds or only when the load engages? A very fast trip suggests a short circuit, wiring issue or incompatible instantaneous setting; a delayed trip may point to overload or slow acceleration.
Check the starting method
Direct-on-line, star-delta, soft starter and variable-frequency drive systems have different current and timing profiles. Confirm that the protection and motor data match the actual starter.
Check the driven load
A seized pump, closed valve, tight belt or process blockage can prevent acceleration. If the motor remains at high current because it cannot reach speed, changing the overload setting is not a repair.
Compare repeat attempts
Do not repeatedly restart a tripping motor without inspection. Record current, voltage and trip code during a controlled test by qualified personnel.
