How to Read a Multifunction Power Meter

A field checklist for voltage, current, power factor, energy and alarm readings.

By Mairun Engineering Guide · Updated October 2026

A multifunction meter can show many values, but the display is useful only when the wiring configuration and CT ratio are correct. Start with the installation information before interpreting a number.

Confirm the configuration

Check the phase system, voltage wiring, CT ratio, frequency and communication settings. If the configured CT ratio is wrong, the current and energy values can look precise while being wrong.

Read values in groups

Record voltage first, then current, active power, reactive power and power factor. Looking at one value in isolation makes it harder to identify whether the issue is a load change or a measurement problem.

Compare phases and time

Take readings at a known load condition and note the time. Compare the same phase across two periods or all phases at one period. A trend often gives more information than a single peak value.

Check alarms and logs

An alarm may describe an electrical condition, a threshold setting or a communication issue. Read the alarm definition and event time before resetting it. Keep a copy of the event record for maintenance review.

A meter is an instrument, not a substitute for a protection study. Verify unusual results with a qualified technician and an independent measurement when needed.
