Temperature and Humidity Control for Switchgear
A practical monitoring plan for cabinets exposed to weather, shutdowns and changing loads.
Temperature and humidity control is most useful when it is connected to an inspection routine. A sensor reading without a response plan does not prevent condensation or corrosion.
Define the risk points
Cold outdoor cabinets, coastal air, frequent shutdowns and poor cable-entry seals deserve priority. Mark where sensors are installed so a later reading can be compared with the same location.
Choose meaningful thresholds
A threshold should reflect the equipment environment and the response time of the team. Separate warning from urgent alarm, and document who receives each notification.
Combine sensing and inspection
Use sensor trends to select inspection times, then confirm the physical condition of terminals, insulation and enclosure seals. A sensor cannot detect every local cold spot.
Review after maintenance
When a heater, fan or humidity controller is replaced, compare the before-and-after trend. Record the setting and the reason for the change.
