Wireless Temperature Monitoring in Electrical Systems

What to define before using wireless sensors on busbars, terminals or cabinets.

By Mairun Engineering Guide · Updated October 2026

Wireless temperature monitoring can help teams identify trends without frequent manual measurements. Its value depends on sensor placement, communication reliability and a clear response process.

Choose the measurement point

A sensor on a busbar joint answers a different question from a sensor on cabinet air. Start with failure history, load and access limitations to choose points that can change a maintenance decision.

Plan communication

Metal enclosures and switch rooms can attenuate radio signals. Test the path under real conditions and document battery, gateway and network status.

Set a baseline

Record temperature with load and ambient conditions. An absolute temperature limit may be useful, but a growing difference between similar phases can be an earlier warning.

Connect alerts to action

Each alarm should identify the point, time, severity and next inspection step. An alert without ownership quickly becomes ignored.

Wireless monitoring does not replace protection, isolation or a physical inspection when an abnormal trend appears.
