How to Choose Image Dimensions for Social Sharing

A practical way to choose a size without making every image unnecessarily large.

Original guide · Updated October 2026

Image dimensions should follow the destination and the way people view it. Oversized files slow pages; undersized files look soft after a platform resizes them.

Start with the display box

Estimate the largest space where the image will appear. A square avatar, landscape card and portrait story need different aspect ratios.

Keep the original

Resize a copy and name the output clearly. Repeated resizing can reduce quality and makes later reuse harder.

Test on a phone

Open the output on a small screen and inspect text and faces. A file that looks fine at full desktop size may be too small when displayed in a feed.
